CSL St Paul’s Public Speaking Competition
March 21, 2013
For the past 12 years the Littoral has been hosting a public speaking contest. Students from across the Lower North Shore gather to compete. Students are divided into two categories; Category 1 - for the students of Secondary 1, 2 and 3 and Category 2 - for students of Secondary 4 and 5.
Students must qualify to compete in the CSL regional Public Speaking Competition by winning at their local school competitions. Each school is permitted to send three students from each category to the final competition. This year 33 students from across the Lower North shore participated in the competition which took place in St Paul’s School this year. In the past, when winter conditions have permitted, students, parents and staff have travelled to the host school by skidoo as airplane costs are very expensive. With the changing winter conditions that we are presently experiencing, the “route blanche” is not always an option.
Students living on the Lower North Shore in isolated communities, not connected by road, do not have the many opportunities to socialize, in person, with other teenagers living on the “Coast”. We have small numbers of students read throughout the territory which does not encourage their abilities and chances of developing social confidence and public speaking competencies. Oral Expression is an important part of our students English Language Arts Program. The CSL Public Speaking Competition is an annual event that engages and motivates our students to further develop these important skills. Our students take great pride in competing and this has become an expected part of our curriculum and a yearly event.
This year, courtesy of the CLD Pacte Rural Agreement funding was provided to support the air travel costs for students travelling from across the Coast. A generous donation of two tickets from Air Labrador was donated for the first prize of both categories.
We are fortunate to have such good partners who always prioritize the youth in our region.
The quality of the speeches was excellent and it gives us great pleasure to recognize the winners.
